I first heard this rowing shanty sung by the American shanty group The Johnson Girls. Its West Indies roots are pretty clear in the relaxed rhythm which is also why it has been doing double duty as a lullaby for my son lately. - Stefan

I heard Roll, Boys, Roll! from a Stan Hugill recording. Stan in turn got his version, as well as many other shanties, from his old Barbadian shipmate Harding who had sailed in British, American, Nova Scotian, and West Indian trade ships. He writes, “when Harding sang it it had its full complement of grace notes and yells.” - James
