Aside from snippets of All For Me Grog and Rio Grande that I heard my dad singing and hearing the Clancy Brothers’ recording of Haul Away Joe when I was a kid, General Taylor was the first real recording of a shanty I heard. I was in my early 20s when I heard Alan Doyle and Great Big Sea belt this one out. I remember being impressed, and thinking to myself that I’d like to record at least one song like this at some point in the future. - James
